My dearest Frank, You will be glad to hear that every copy of  S. and S. is sold, and that it has brought me £140 besides the copyright, if that should ever be of any value.

In 1788,  14 ½ year-old Frank Austen prepared to put out to sea and leave his family. After excelling in his courses at the Portsmouth Naval Academy, the Commissioner of the Dockyards recommended that Frank join the Perserverance under the direction of Cornwallis, who was recently appointed Commander-in-Chief of India. The letter that young Francis received from his father, Rev.  George Austen, upon his departure was one that he would treasure for the rest of his life. In part, the Reverend wrote:

My dear Cassandra, Frank is made. He was yesterday raised to the rank of Commander and appointed to the Petterel sloop, now at Gilbraltar. – Dec 28, 1798

By 1800, Frank, was still single, although his captain’s salary would enable him to marry and support a family in reasonable comfort. The letter Jane would write him on January 21, 1805 was heartbreaking:

The news must have been a great blow to Frank, who sailed the world over and only saw his family sporadically. Perhaps his grief was somewhat ameliorated by Jane’s next letter a little over a week later:

My mother has found among our dear father’s little personal property a small astronomical instrument, which she hopes you will accept for his sake. It is, I believe, a compass and sundial, and is in a black shagreen case…Yours very affecly, JA.

Burroughs appeared as himself in a number of films in the 1980s and 1990s, including the 1986 Laurie Anderson concert film Home of the Brave (in which Burroughs dances a slow-motion tango with Anderson during one number and provides vocal samples in other parts of the film), and the documentaries Heavy Petting and What Happened to Kerouac?

Burroughs also played a cameo part in the film Drugstore Cowboy , and his recording of The Junky's Christmas formed the basis for a 1993 animated short film of the same title in which Burroughs himself appears. He collaborated on the documentary Words of Advice: William S. Burroughs on the Road eventually released in 2007. An animated short film based upon his story " Ah Pook is Here " has also been produced.

Fifty years after Star Trek first beamed onto U.S. television screens, fans continue to be fascinated by stories of behind-the-scenes dramas.

Now handwritten notes written by Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, to be auctioned Thursday, are giving die-hard Trekkies an inside look into some of the problems that plagued the cult hit in its infancy.

Gene Roddenberry’s original series made stars of Shatner, George Takei , Nichelle Nichols and the late Leonard Nimoy. It later spawned an entire universe of spin-off films and TV shows, but Shatner recalls there was some ambivalence to the show from NBC when Roddenberry first pitched it.

In one note, Shatner describes being invited to watch the show creator’s original pilot and thinking it “was a little slow, a little ponderous.” He suggested it could use “some lightness, some humor.”

“He looked at me from across the desk and after a silence said: 'Let's do it.' We shot the pilot film for the second time and we were rewarded by a sell [to NBC].”

The 85-year-old also revealed that NBC wasn’t convinced by Spock’s pointy ears—which have become synonymous with the series—considering them “too devilish.” But, Shatner adds: “Gene fought for the ears and like in a really good bullfight, he was awarded the ears.”
