“You never conquer a mountain. Mountains can’t be conquered you conquer yourself–your hopes, your fears.” Jim Whitaker

“You progress not through improving what has been done, but reaching toward what has yet to be done.” Kahlil Gibran

“Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” — H.I.M. Haile Selassie I

“The more uninspiring your origins the more likely you are to use your imagination and invent worlds where everything seems possible,” Howard Schultz

”We wish to declare before the world the importance of Lebanon, its historical mission, accomplished down the centuries. A country of many religious faiths, Lebanon has shown that these different faiths can live together in peace, brotherhood and cooperation.” Late Pope John Paul II.

”Lebanon is more than a country. It is a message of freedom and an example of pluralism for East and West.” Late Pope John Paul II.

Multiculturalism turns me on.  I fight to help it thrive in the US.  I love the food, music, art of other cultures, and when they mix with mine.  But mostly, I love the people and our differences.

I am now creating 100 portraits of the people who caught my eye in my travels in the Middle East. So far, I have about 25. Some of them are friends, most I don’t know, but I liked their looks.  As I prepare to draw them, I am nostalgic.  Showing my photographs of some children to Jim — we agree — they meet our ultimate cute test — as adorable as Labrador puppies.

Other transporting memories are the jingling tinkle of spoons in teacups.  We all used glass cups and I listened to the clinking sounds ringing out of neighbors’ windows and mingling with birdsong each morning.

New York’s Central Park has been replaced by the Luxor Corniche as the address my heart visits at the sound of trotting horse hooves.

My last early morning in Cairo, the exquisite and stirring quality of the local muezzin’s voice announcing  fajr finally registered with me as exceptional. Now, I yearn to hear it again.    I, for one, would love to hear the adhan five times a day here at home, even though I am not a Muslim.  I like the sound of church bells too.

Brushing my teeth in my hotel room in Zamalek, I listened to the city awakening…mornings would bring soft chirping honks all the way down Ismail Mohamed Street by the few cars as they crossed each intersection.  It was a sweet greeting that was supplanted later in the day by sheer cacophony.  Cairo pulsed in me, and I miss it.
